Kokstad town bulk water supply :-
The objective of this scheme was a drought relief project to augment the current bulk water supply to the town of Kokstad drawn from the Crystal Springs dam. The project comprised; Provision of a 6m dam on the Mzintlava river.
Provision of an additional pumping station to abstract raw water from this dam. 5Km. of mainline piping to connect the new pumping station to the Kokstad water treatment plant. Funding in amount of R4,0m was solicited from the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry?s drought relief allocation and the project was concluded and commissioned during the 2004/5 financial year.
Kraansdraai Water & Sanitation projects (Ward 2) :-
The objective of the project is to:
Provide the rural community of Kraansdraai, comprising some 133 households with a viable and sustainable source of potable water and sanitation.
In order to promote health and hygiene awareness in the community the need to provide these households with access to a rudimentary level of sanitation was identified as a dire need.
The project comprised:
The provision of an equipped bore-hole connected to 98 yard water tanks. The provision of 133 VIP type toilets.
Funding in amount of R2,6m for Water project and R370, 792 for sanitation was solicited from the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the project was completed and commission in 2 phases during the 2002/03 financial year.
In addition to the foregoing highlighted projects, the Sisonke District Municipality has:
Provided 14 rural communities and schools with an up-graded access, totaling some 41 Km. of access roads. Undertaken 17 independent social cohesion projects, being; School developments (Ablution facilities and perimeter fencing), Irrigation systems, crèche developments(Ablution facilities and perimeter fencing), market stalls, sports facilities, facilities for rural agricultural cooperatives, Taxi rank restorations and the provision of community halls.
As an integral portion of the funding of these projects, some R305 000 has been expended on community training, in order to equip the affected communities with the capacity to take-charge? and to manage the sustainability of the projects.
